BONNARD Pierre (1867-1947)
L.A.S. "PBonnard", January 4 [1905 ?], to MISIA; 4 pages in-8. Beautiful letter from the painter to Misia, who was his model and the muse of the Tout-Paris. [Misia Godebska (1872-1950) was then in Spain, where she had been taken by the press millionaire Alfred Edwards, a few months before their marriage, while still married to Thadée Natanson. After divorcing Edwards, she would marry José-Maria Sert]. Bonnard was moved by the letter of his "dear Mitia", of whom he often thought, "not without some concern I confess, although I do not allow myself to judge what your new existence brings you of joy or sadness". She left a great void among her friends; he heard from her through Cypa and Vuillard. "The story of your portrait in Spanish is very amusing and our artist must have considered it a good fortune to have such a model who has not yet had a painter worthy of him (I speak for myself without false modesty). But it is very nice of you to be interested in works of art in the midst of your preoccupations and it takes a very calm mind to attach great importance to these games of big children"... A. Gold and R. Fizdale, Misia. La Vie de Misia Sert (Gallimard, 1981), p. 117-118.
