COROT Camille (1796-1875)
L.A.S. "C. Corot" with 2 DRAWINGS, Paris January 29, 1855, to Charles LE ROUX; 2 pages and a half in-8 on blue paper. Beautiful letter illustrated with two pen-and-ink drawings, sketches of his last paintings. [Charles LE ROUX (1814-1895) from Nantes was a pupil of Corot; a landscape painter and a rich landowner, he was involved in agriculture and local politics]. He regretted that his friend did not come to Paris in the winter: "In May I am always away. I am thinking of going to visit you for a week or so, but I don't know the time yet, as I have to go to Normandy and the North Coast in the same trip. Finally, you will be warned & I will have great pleasure to see you when I go". As for the Salon, the number of items sent is not limited, "only I am not for sending old ones. I only send new works. I send five. [...] The friends who come to the house seem happy with what I have done. I have a large one of eight feet of which you will find a sketch below and four others of more modest dimensions. Corot drew two of these paintings in pen on the second sheet, indicating the dimensions "8 feet" and "4 feet", and the titles, with a brief comment: "effect of the clear morning" and "Ferrières morning - more serious".
