GLEIZES Albert (1881-1953)
MANUSCRIT autograph signed "Albert Gleizes", La Peinture et ses lois. La nouvelle conception du naturalisme, 1922; 28 leaves in-4 in autograph folder (edges frayed on some leaves). Important theoretical text. The folder has a different subtitle than the one placed at the head of the manuscript: "or From Cubism to a New Application of Naturalism in the Plastic Work," with the date: "Begun on Monday, June 5, 1922," and a small pen-and-ink sketch. The manuscript is written in purple ink, in a small, tight handwriting filling the front of the pages; it has numerous erasures and corrections. The beginning is in two different versions; the manuscript is unfinished, and was used to establish a dactylogram. One sheet, entitled The painted work, presents a summary in 9 chapters: 1. The Middle Ages from the Renaissance and present point of view. 2. Painting and Religion. [...] 9. Beginning of the XXth century, intellectuality ". This manuscript gives a primitive version of the beginning of the essay of Gleizes, Painting and its laws: what was to come out of Cubism, published in the review La Vie des Lettres et des Arts in March 1923, and in booklet in 1924 " We live an extraordinarily moving time. It seems that we are being dragged along by a current of unheard-of power that throws men and works that have come out of them against a wall as if to cancel their appearance and erase their memory"... Thus begins Gleizes, before beginning a long development on the history of art, which is interrupted here with the Empire; the last page, of which only a quarter is written, is the outline of a development on the 19th century.
