Autograph musical manuscript, Le Bal de Béatrice d'Este (1907) ; 85 pages in-fol. in titled folder. Orchestral score of Le Bal de Béatrice d'Este, a delightful masterpiece. This delightful suite for wind instruments, percussion, two harps and piano conductor, evokes a ball at the home of Beatrice d'Este, Duchess of Milan, in the sixteenth century, and sounds like a recreation of ancient dances, with a subtle use of the timbres of this curious staff. Le Bal de Béatrice d'Este was first performed in Madeleine LEMAIRE's salon by the Société des Instruments à vent and Reynaldo Hahn at the piano on April 12, 1905 (and again on April 19), before being given in public on May 28 at the Risler concert at the Nouveau Théâtre, and being performed again in many salons of the Parisian social scene. Reynaldo Hahn wrote to his publisher Henri Heugel that it was "a little fantasy for wind instruments, piano, harps and timpani, written in two days for the wind instrument society; I thought it would live for one evening, but it was so successful that it has already been played several times, that it was requested in Brussels, that it was played again on the 25th at Mme de Pourtalès's house, and on the 29th at Risler's concert"... It was published in 1905 by Heugel, before being given again with the greatest brilliance at the Princess de POLIGNAC's, in front of an audience of personalities, where it won a great triumph to which Marcel PROUST had come to attend. The orchestra is composed of a piano, 2 flutes (the first one playing the small one), an oboe, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 chromatic horns in F, a trumpet in C, a pair of timpani, a triangle part, cymbals and crotales, and 2 harps. The manuscript is in midnight blue ink on 18-line paper. It consists of the following seven entries: I. Entrée de Ludovic le More (p. 1-9), Maestoso ; II. Lesquercade (Pavane légère) (p. 11-29, of which p. 11, 16, 20, 27, 29 by a copyist), Andantino; III. Romanesque (p. 30-36), Lento; IV. Iberian (pp. 37-48, including 43-44 by a copyist), Marcato; V. Leda and the Bird (Leonardesque interlude) (pp. 49-55/59, including 51, 52, 54 by a copyist), Modéré; VI. Courante (pp. 60-79, including 64-65, 72, 74-77 by a copyist), Gai, without speed; VII.
