FARRÈRE Claude (1876-1957). - Lot 90
FARRÈRE Claude (1876-1957). MANUSCRIT autograph "Claude Farrère," L'Île au Grand Puits, 1920-1921; 223 folios in-fol. written on the front (7 of which typed with autograph additions and corrections), in brick-red folder with autograph title signed and the ink stamp of the Association des écrivains combattants (spine of folder partly torn). Complete working manuscript of this long novel. This novel was published, as an "unpublished novel", in the July 1921 issue of Œuvres libres; it will be collected in Histoires de très loin ou d'assez près (Flammarion, 1923). The manuscript presents numerous erasures and corrections; "commencé le 18 décembre 1920 fini le 7 mai 1921"; dates in green pencil appear in the margin of the text, sometimes with notes: "4/2/1921 retour de Bruxelles", "Lyautey maréchal 20/2/21". Farrère dedicated his manuscript: "to my wife Henriette Roggers", then crossed out the words "my wife" in blue pencil. The Island of the Great Well recounts the adventure of Lord Nettlewood and his elite guests aboard the yacht La Feuille de Rose: having disembarked on a picturesque desert island off the coast of Ireland, to visit its legendary Well of Truth, they see the yacht disappear off the coast, carried away by a storm. Then complex passions, sentimental and political, are unleashed... But in the early morning the yacht is fortunately back... 6 small in-4 pages of autograph notes, with a pen drawing of a schooner are attached: elements of the drama, original title (Les Naufragés, corrected), names, qualities and ages of the characters.
