VERLAINE Paul (1844-1896).
COLLECTION of 56 autographed POEMS signed " P. Verlaine" or "Paul Verlaine", 1891-1895; 65 pages of various papers and formats, mounted on tabs or with window; the whole bound in a square in-8 volume, lavaliere morocco, covers with a repeating pattern (red flower with green leaves) mosaicked in a frame of sand and dark brown morocco listels, spine titled gold decorated with listel boxes of the same, sandy morocco lining set with a gilt fillet and framed with green and dark brown listels, green silk endpapers, double marbled paper endpapers, guilloche headpieces, wavy fillet on the edges, gilt edges on witnesses, bordered case (Noulhac rel. 1924- Mad. Noulhac del.). Exceptional set of 56 poems used for the edition of the Œuvres posthumes. The Varia section of the Œuvres posthumes at Messein in 1903 contains 68 poems, 56 of which were edited after our collection. Several appeared in reviews, but very few in volume. The poems are all signed, unless otherwise stated, quite often dated, and most of them bear in the margin the title of the forthcoming collection Varia, and sometimes that of Femmes, in view of a new edition. They present variants, and most of them bear erasures and corrections. We refer to the edition of the Œuvres poétiques complètes of the Bibliothèque de la Pléiade (Pl.). 1. in 187..., January 15, 1891 (1 p. in-8). "The park laughs with sifted rays, / With kisses, with bursts of women's voices"... 6 quatrains (Pl. p. 543). 2. Rotterdam", 9bre 1892 (1 p. in-8). "After he has crossed first the green lands / Full of regular water"... 5 quatrains (Pl. p. 983). 3-4. Le Charme du Vendredi Saint I et II. Two pieces of 4 quatrains, each dated at the top: I Paris, Thursday, March 30, 1893 "The cathedral is admirably gray / While the day gleams adorably"... II Friday, March 31, 1893 "The mad sun of March awakens a little more the greenery / Of the fine trees of the quay bordering the pure beauty"... (2 p. in-8, Pl. p. 986-87). 5. spring impression,May 1, 1893 (1 p. ¼ small in-4). "There are days - have you noticed? - / Where one feels lighter than a bird"... 5 quatrains (Pl. p 988 ), with a clipping of the pre-original with correction and annotation : Impressions de printemps published in Le Boul'Mich of July 151893. 6. Souvenir of 19 9bre 1893, Dieppe-Newhaven (1 p. ½ in-8). "My heart is as big as the sea, / Which exiles itself from the loved one!"... 9 tercets, three of which are heavily crossed out (Pl. p. 1005). 7. Return, with note in margin: " (in pendant to Mon cœur est gros comme la mer) " (2 p. in-4), " La mer est douce comme un cœur / Et je rentre dans la patrie... / La mer est forte comme un cœur "... 16 tercets and one verse (forgotten in the Pléiade!, Œuvres posthumes, p. 67). 8. To Ph..., end of August 1893 Broussais hospital (1 p. small in-4). "Since these two weeks / Where I almost died"... 6 quatrains (Pl. p. 991). 9. "I saw again, almost triumphant"... (2 p. in-12). Unsigned draft of this poem of five sizains, collected in Epigrams (XVI, v, Mons), conceived while revisiting the prison of Mons, during his arrival in Belgium for his 1893 conferences. "I saw again, almost triumphantly, / The city where these months of shadow awaited me"... Numerous erasures and corrections (Pl. p. 267). 10-13. Inseparables, suite of 4 sonnets published under the title Cordialités¸ marked by Verlaine in the corner (4 oblong pages in-8) : I to Ernest Delahaye : " In this Paris where we are neighbors and so far / From each other that it is a real misfortune "..., II " Two Parisian hummingbirds, two gossipers / Unceasingly telling each other the false and the true / News "..., III For a party " Imperial, since Eugénie ! and very sweet / Since she herself and very royal, since I!"..., IV For the people buried in the Pantheon "Dead on the side, a lot of ashes, some bones"... (Pl. p. 994-996). 14. Rendez-vous (1 p. in-8, unsigned). "In the still sepulchral room / Of the still fatal house"...5 quatrains, first shorter version of the piece VI of Hombres, bearing the same title (Pl. 1223). 15. Sérieusement (1 p. in-8), intended for Femmes. An alternative title Féroce is added in pencil (which will be adopted in the Œuvres posthumes). 4 quatrains and a verse: "You saw me dying almost / Or rather almost dead"... (Pl. p. 1013). 16-19. Apaisement II-V, Hôpital Broussais 7bre 93. (4 p. in-8, the last one dated and signed). 4 pieces numbered from II to V, published under the title Contre la jalousie (renumbered I-IV). II "Jealousy is multiform / In its monotonous bitterness"... 6 quatrains. III "Besides, jealousy is stupid / First of all, it is useless"... 3 septains. IV "Bah! trust or jealousy! / Idle words and impious things"..., sonnet.
