L.A.S. "Émile Zola à Aix", following a L.A.S. from his mother, [Aix circa 1845-1846?], to his parents (4 p. in-4 including a half-p. from Zola). Émilie Zola reassures her mother about the health of little Émile (7 years old), but it is also her husband's turn to be ill. Life in Provence is not easy: "a country of savages" that the mountains surround like the walls of a prison, the sun burns, and they often lack "what to eat since in this heat there is nothing". The work on the canal continues. Émile writes awkwardly to his grandfather: "My dear Papa Aubert, I have been very sick and I often thought of you. Mother tells me that soon I will embrace you. I will give you a little present. I have a little woman in Aix, her name is Rose, and I play well with her. He asks her for "a lot of toys because I break a lot of them"... And his mother comments: "If I had to let Emile write everything he says now, I would have enough for tomorrow". L.A.S. "Zola Emile", in verse, [January 1850-1852?], to his mother (1 p. and a half in-8, address "To my mother"). Letter of wishes in 4 quatrains : " My dear mother on this solemn day / I wish you long days / Of health and eternal happiness [...] You who took care of my childhood / Who always watched over me / With sweet vigilance [...] May this new year / Pass without sorrow / And may each day / Bring you a better destiny ".A.S. "Zola Emile", [Aix 13 April 1856], to his mother in Aix (3 p. small in-4, address). Letter full of filial love, in which the young Zola apologizes for his bad behavior during the study with a young master and repents for the sorrow he may have caused his mother. The principal has punished him in an exemplary manner, and Émile guesses the grief this must have caused his mother. "Don't cry because the thought hurts me too much [...] But don't grieve, I beg you, no matter what the punishment is [...] making you cry is what I dread most"... Émilie Zola (Émile's mother). L.A.S., [Aix June 17, 1844], to her mother Mme Aubert in Vaux (Meuse) (2 p. in-4, address, repar.). She complains about her difficult financial situation, because her debtor "knows how to make those who expect him to stick his tongue out"; her husband negotiates "a loan on his property. The work on the canal ("the Aix affair") is progressing, and the newspapers will soon give news of it... "our poor little Emile is still very ill for the last two days, and we fear for him because there is a fever that carries off children"...
