MANUSCRIT, Exposition of the facts and plots... - Lot 160 - Drouot Estimations
MANUSCRIT, Exposition of the facts and plots which prepared the usurpation of the Crown of Spain, and of the means which the emperor of the French used to carry it out; by S. Ex. M. de Cevallos, first secretary of State and of the Dispatches of S.M. Ferdinand VII. Translated literally from the Spanish. 1808; small in-4 of 69 ff; contemporary half-brown calf binding, yellow edges (contemporary binding). Manuscript executed at the time of the translation of the Exposición de los hechos y maquinaciones que han preparado la usurpación de la corona de España (1808), first published clandestinely in 1809. At the end is the Manifesto of the Spanish nation to Europe, signed by Marin de GARAY, secretary of the Supreme Junta, calling for an unremitting fight against Napoleon; and three letters from MURAT to General Dupont, proving that the intention of the French was always to take power in Spain. Banned, the French translation of the work circulated under the cloak in the form of handwritten copies. The Spanish war was for the Spaniards the guerra de la Independencia. The pamphlet expresses the resistance to the invader on the part of a people spontaneously and unanimously raised against the occupier. Cevallos vigorously denounces the French usurpation, accompanying his text with supporting documents: secret treaties, correspondence, etc. Provenance: Imperial Library of Dominique de VILLEPIN, March 19, 2008, n° 107.
