FOUCAULD Charles de (1858-1916) explorateur et missionnaire.
5 L.A.S. "fr. Ch. de Foucauld" and one L.A. (incomplete from the end), Tamanrasset 1910-1914, to Paul GARNIER; 12 pages in-8 and 8 pages small in-4, with his motto Jesus Caritas at the head. Interesting testimony on the daily life of Father de Foucauld, his relations with the tribes and the movements of troops in the Sahara. The young officer from Bisenne, Paul GARNIER (1885-1917), spent part of his career in the Sahara, having left the Alpine hunters to join the Algerian meharists; he then explored the Hoggar massif and became friends with Father de Foucauld. October 5, 1910. He thanks for the sending of "good vegetables", and intervenes on behalf of the natives: Litni asks that we withhold "25 douros (125 francs) from the Iklân-en-Taousit who left with loads of the Cie for Ti-nZaouten on the price of the rent of their camels that they have to collect on their return"... He transmits letters, and asks for blue cloth... (the end is missing). - August 22, 1912. He intervenes at the request of "Mohammed Abdallah, Kebir of Tit", in favor of "his young Bélla" who must be "imprisoned for insubordination", so that he is "exempted from the trip to Motylinski & from prison". The chief of the dag Râli asks for the "loan of 2 pickaxes [...] for the completion of a feggara that he is doing in Abalessa & which presents difficulties because of the hardness of the ground; there are 15 workers occupied"... - December 30, 1912. He was unable to find "camels that could leave for the Adrar [...] Nothing new either from the Touat, or from the Adrar, or from the Air. No news from the Damergon caravans or from General [LAPERRINE]. He asks for seeds for the haratis, and for himself "quinine tablets, antipyrine tablets, & opium pills..." - January 4, 1913. He received a letter announcing the arrival of the General and his orderly "for January 15"; and "small Arabic letters ordering the Kebars of the neighboring tribes to go to I-n-Amezel with as many of their men as possible and with a brilliant crew to receive Gal Bailloud [...] Désiré informs me that the American mission accompanied by Constant should arrive on December 16. Litni is looking for a good mehari: "If the Air Force caravans arrive and he finds a suitable mehari among them, he will send it to you immediately. About the General's journey: "If he went from In Amegel to Tamanrasset by Tit, I would make every effort so that he would go as far as Motylinski and also as far as the Asekrem"... He gave "a first-class dressing down to Saïd for having dared to ask you for this ridiculous quantity of wheat: 60 liters are perfectly sufficient. Here the hunger starts to become serious: nobody has anything left"...- April 23, 1913. He reports the opinion of the captain on Garnier's situation: "it seemed to him on the one hand that to occupy yourself with a colonization enterprise while remaining in the company was impossible, your service not being compatible with these occupations"... Etc. - October 18 [1914]. Mr. Girod is going to be sent "with 60 rifles to Ahmet while waiting for news, to go to meet the vaguely announced rezzou of Oulad Djerir"... Attached is a typed copy of the correspondence of Father de Foucauld to Garnier (about twenty letters); a l.a.s. from René BAZIN evoking Father de Foucauld (1921); the booklet Sahara et Touareg. Letters of Father de Foucauld to our fellow citizen Paul Garnier, by Adrien Nicklès (1921).
