françois ier (1494-1547)
L.S. "Francoys", Lyon June 1, 1533, to Captain MERVEILLES, gentleman of his chamber; countersigned by his adviser Jean BRETON; 1 page in-fol., address on the back with remainder of red wax seal. About his next conference with Pope Clement VII. [This interview finally took place in Marseilles on October 28, 1533; it was there, among other things, that the marriage of the Pope's niece, Catherine de Médicis, to the Duke of Orleans, son of the King, the future Henry II, was arranged]. The Grand Master showed him what the captain and his brothers had written to him, and he was grateful to them for the good office and trouble they had taken to warn him of things and to assure him of the goodwill and affection of the people named in their letter. He writes to Count MAXIMILIEN, and instructs the captain to thank him on his behalf... "I inform you that it has been concluded and agreed between our Holy Father the Pope and me that there will be a meeting of the two of us in the city of Nice during the fifteenth of the month of July next, at which meeting we will be able to speak of several good and great things concerning the good repo ssurety and establishment of the whole of Christendom"... The Grand Master will leave in a few days for Provence in order to prepare everything... He adds in a postscript that because of the "extreme heat", and to avoid the Holy Father taking harm in his trip, he postpones the interview to August 15. He will remain in the meantime "around Lyon and its surroundings", and will approach Nice when it is time.
