HENRI IV (1553-1610) - Lot 170
HENRI IV (1553-1610) L.A.S. "Henry," [ca. 1578?], to "la Royne mere du roy monsigneur," CATHERINE DE MEDICIS; 2 pages in-fol., address (significant pale wetness at bottom of letter). Recommendations of the King of Navarre to Catherine de Medici and Henri III, to restore peace in France ravaged by the wars of religion. "Madame I suplye you very humbly avoyr egardr a ce que je vous ecry [...] & croyre qu'il est besoin dy pourvoyr si vous desyres establyr une bonne paix entre les sugects du roy. I make beautiful promises every day to those religious people who come to complain to me and assure them of your good and right intention to make peace and that the king and you will do them justice, but you must see some effects. The desire that I know you all have to see a good peace & to keep it makes me careful to inform you of what serves to keep it & what can alter & break it. This dismantling has been imprudently done & ill-timed, it is necessary to remedy it with something you are asked to do. Letablysemant of the peace can bring more good than the dismantling, often an trying to do something that serves it arivent which damages infinitely. But I will leave this subject to speak to you about my private party, & tell you that my people can have no hope for me in court, I am so favored that there is not one who is not more tractable than me. I have not had any assignment of my pansyon, it is of another quality than the others, it is given in compensation for the loss of my kingdom for the service of this crown"...
