Classic dictionary of natural history. Work directed by Bory de Saint-Vincent. Paris, Rey et Gravier, Baudouin frères, 1822-1831. 17 volumes in-8, half Russian leather, red paper boards, crowned figure in the center, smooth spine decorated, untrimmed (Period binding). First edition of this monument of natural history. 159 engraved plates, of which 150 colored at the time, plus a folding map for the primitive distribution of the human race on the surface of the globe. These plates cover all the kingdoms of Nature: plants, shells, butterflies, amphibians, fish, mammals, etc. Their interest is both scientific and aesthetic. The scientists who participated in the writing of the book are among the best of their time: Jussieu, de Candolle, Geoffroy de Saint-Hilaire, Delafosse, Lucas, etc. The author of this publication, Jean-Baptiste BORY DE SAINT-VINCENT, was not only a distinguished scholar, close to Lacépède, but also a valiant military man present at Austerlitz, who later served on the staff of Ney and then Soult. Elected deputy during the Hundred Days, he was condemned to five years of exile by the second Restoration. Copy with the figure of Marie-Louise. Important freckles, some browned leaves. Restorations to some headpieces, small rubs to the binding.
