[MARIE-LOUISE]. DU ROZOIR Charles (1790-1844).
Éloge de Pie VI, avec l'Histoire religieuse de l'Europe sous son pontificat, accompagné de pièces officielles et de documens authentiques. Paris, Arthus Bertrand, 1825. In-8, half Russian red leather with corners, crowned figure in the center, smooth spine decorated (period binding). First edition, decorated with a lithographed portrait of Pius VI. History of Pope Pius VI (1775-1799), martyr of the French Revolution, the Directory and the Consulate. After having witnessed, powerless, the entry of Berthier's troops into Rome in February 1798 and the proclamation of the Roman Republic, the Pontiff was forced to renounce his temporal power and to leave the Eternal City. Taking refuge in Tuscany, he was captured by the French army and deported to the prison of Valencia where, after an interminable journey, he died of exhaustion. An enlightening work on the confrontation that the French Republic and then Napoleon had with the Papacy, beyond the person of Pius VI. A copy from the library of Marie-Louise in Parma, bound with the figure of the former Empress of the French. Some foxing. Spine a little blackened. Provenance : Calvin Bullock (ex-libris).
