Paris, Pillet l'ainé, 1822. 2 volumes in-8, red morocco, double fillet and roulette crossing at the corners, crowned numeral in the center, smooth spine, interior roulette, lining and endpapers of blue moire, gilt edges (period binding). First edition, decorated with a portrait of the author engraved on copper by Lefèvre. Historical and philosophical essay on the ethics of governments, by Etienne de JOUY, former officer who served in the East India Company and in the Northern Army, journalist, playwright, librettist and chansonnier, elected to the academic chair in 1815. He was a member of the Déjeuner de la Fourchette, a society of literary men grouped around Jean-François Ducis, and a member of the Société du Caveau. He was responsible for some of the major operas of the 19th century, such as Rossini's Guillaume Tell and Spontini's La Vestale. Copy with the figure of Marie-Louise, duchess of Parma, ex-empress of the French.
