[NAPOLÉON Ier (1769-1821).
Pizarre, melodrama in three acts, in prose. Paris, Barba, An XI - 1803. In-8, long-grained red morocco, border decorated with stylized palmettes, smooth spine decorated, inner lace, roulette on the edges, gilt edges (Period binding). First edition of this historical melodrama inspired by the life of Francisco Pizarro, famous Spanish conquistador. In his dedication letter to Napoleon, the author declares to have taken the First Consul as a model for "the Peruvian monarch", one of the characters of his play. Precious dedication copy, bearing this autograph dispatch from the author on one of the endpapers: to General Bonaparte from the author. Fortière. There is no trace of this Fortière, nor of other writings by him. A note placed on the back of the title page specifies that this play is totally different from the one performed at the Porte Saint-Martin theater. This annotation refers to Pizarre, ou la Conquête du Pérou, a historical melodrama, in three acts, in prose and with great spectacle composed by René-Charles Guilbert de Pixerécourt (1773- 1844), played on September 27, 1802. Restorations to the headpieces and corners. Provenance: library of Louis-Philippe at the Palais-Royal (wet stamp on the title); Dr. Maurice Catinat (bookplate).
