RUSSIE. TOOKE William (1744-1820) History of the Russian Empire, under the reign of Catherine II, and at the end of the eighteenth century. Paris, De l'Imprimerie de Crapelet, Maradan, An X-1801. 7 volumes in-8, long-grained red demimaroquin, numeral in the center, smooth spine decorated (Period binding). First edition of the French translation. It was established by Alexandre-Joseph de Bassinet, who dedicated it to Alexandre I, Autocrat of all the Russias and of Georgia, Protector of the Military and Religious Order of Saint John of Jerusalem. An important monograph by a British minister who spent almost twenty years in Russia where he was chaplain of the Anglican Church in Kronstadt and St. Petersburg. The author details all aspects of this empire: history, geography, ethnography, economy, institutions, etc. Copy with an undetermined number A.
