SISMONDI Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de (1773-1842) - Lot 210
SISMONDI Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de (1773-1842) Examen de la constitution françoise. Paris, Treuttel et Würtz, 1815. 4 works in one volume in-8, half-brown calf with corners, smooth spine decorated, red morocco title page, speckled edges (Binding of the period). First edition of this defense of the liberal constitution of the Cent-Jours. The Acte additionnel aux constitutions de l'Empire, in the drafting of which Benjamin Constant participated, was met with a tremendous outcry. "In the midst of this chorus of insults, the eminent voice of Sismondi, an old friend of Benjamin's, stands out and courageously praises the text. (...) Stemming from the cenacle of Coppet, he had long hated in Napoleon the usurper of Brumaire and the dictator of Europe (...). But the spectacle of Paris in 1814 revolted him: disgusted by the palinodies of the Senate, he was indignant about a Restoration imposed by the European counter-revolution and these Bourbons, fugitive princes and beggars who alone in Europe had never drawn the sword for their own cause. Dismayed by the policy carried out, he takes the side of the Emperor as soon as the Flight of the Eagle is announced. (...) Hating the ultras, Sismondi finds vibrant accents to invite in his work to the union around the revenant in front of the reactionary Europe " (Villepin, Les Cent-Jours, 297-299). One finds bound with : - PRADT de. History of the embassy in the great duchy of Warsaw in 1812, by M. de Pradt, archbishop of Malines, then ambassador in Warsaw. Fourth edition.
